I wrote an explanation as to why I haven't been updating, and then decided to translate. The results are ( under the cut. )
You know what's sad, it took me all day to translate those two paragraphs. It's sad that for my own conlangs, I don't have much memorized. I wonder why that is. Also, I had to create vocab as I went along, mostly for the Silíré translation, as it's the newest of the two. Anyway. Whee! An update!

Thought I'd start out with a nice table of pronunciation, so that when words from the conlang begin to sneak in, there will be a referrence for those interested. Please note that I really don't know how much of a difference there will be in certain types of English, particularly concerning the vowels... when I give examples, I could be telling you to pronounce something in a way that sounds different to you than it does to me. Please keep in mind that I'm thinking in American English (although I really doubt it will make that much of a difference). Also, any symbols used are used purely for aesthetic reasons and have nothing to do with any other sort of real-life language that uses them.

Nothing really yet, as I'm busy being lazy with school. Although I have been thinking about my conlang lately, and I'm having some problems with the damned vowels.
My problem is this: I have already decieded what the symbols used for what I call the "hard vowels" will be: á (aw), é (ay), ú (oo). No problem there. However, I'm having problems with the dipthongs /ai/ and /oi/. Originally they were displayed as á and ó, until I changed the circumflex used on the "hard vowels" (it was too ugly) to that accent, and now I'm at a loss as to what to use for /ai/ and /oi/. I would prefer to have an a and an o with a dot over it, but I'm not sure that even exists. I found one with a dot under it (ạ and ọ), but it was hidden deep within the recesses of the Word symbols diretory and so I doubt it would appear on most people's computer.
So, should I give /ai/ and /oi/ a circumflex, making them â and ô? Or how about an umlaut, ä and ö? How about æ and œ? Or I could use à and ò, with the backwards accents, although it would be hard to tell the difference between á and à. Very confusing. I feel I shouldn't go on to typing up all my new vocab until I've got this one figured out. Might go with the circumflexes.
Can anyone see the ạ and ọ on their computers? I'm wondering if Microsoft Word is needed to make this work, or if they would work by themselves. Don't want to take the chance.
Damn dipthongs.

Well, my friend juleskicks made a post recently where she considered creating a journal for her own original novel. I thought it was a wonderful idea, and, being the good person that I am, snatched said idea and used it for my own purposes. Sadly, I doubt I will be posting any snippets of fiction, as I cannot write very well, and if I do write, I usually keep it to myself. But we'll see. In the meantime, what you will post likely see here are articles about culture, geneology charts, maps, language translations, small ideas when I get them, and the like. I have such a huge world in my head, and it's going to take awhile to get the particulars of it written out. I think I should do that before I even think about attempting to write a story! I doubt anyone is interested, but if you are, please feel free to friend and comment. (And by the way, the title, "Ilasathai," simply means "My daydreams." I couldn't think of a better name!) |
